You missed a volley. Your partner looks at you as if you have personally cancelled padel. The next point has not started, but the atmosphere has already lost.
There is plenty of room for competitive bite in this game. Aim it across the net, not across your own half of the court. A useful partnership is not one without mistakes. It is one that knows what to do after them.
Make the small agreements first.
Before play, spend a moment agreeing on your calls: “mine”, “yours”, “back”. Use words you both understand and can recognise quickly. If you speak different languages, keep the vocabulary especially simple.
Discuss how you will handle a ball through the middle. Do not assume that the player on a particular side always takes it: handedness, position and the ball itself matter. A clear early call is more useful than two late swings.
Give information, not a performance review.
“They are coming forward” gives your partner something to work with. “Why do you always do that?” gives them an argument. During play, keep calls short and relevant to the ball. Leave technical coaching for a pause, and ask whether your partner wants it.
Compare these two sentences: “You never move” and “Shall we move forward together when we get the chance?” The second gives both players a next action. It also leaves some dignity on the court.
After a mistake, make the next point easier.
Acknowledge it briefly. Agree on one plan if necessary. Then return to position. You do not need to pretend every error was brilliant, but you also do not need to hold a tribunal over a ball in the net.
If the same misunderstanding repeats, bring it up at a suitable break: “We both went for that one. How shall we call the next?” Describe the moment, not your partner’s personality.
Try it next time: agree on three calls before you start. Afterwards, name one moment when communication helped. That is a better souvenir than a list of each other’s errors.
The serpentarium has rivals enough. Your partner should not be another one.
